BLOG ASSIGNMENT 004.

First of all, HAPPY FRIDAY. I thought this day would never come. But since I finally have a moment to sit down and breathe, I'd like to take a second to chit chat with you about my studio project, the cabinet for the Weatherspoon.

This project employs the principles and elements of design in the following ways:

SPACE : We are having to expend extensive thought about how this cabinet is going to exist in the space. We wanted it to not only bring something to the gift shop, but to the museum space as a whole, reflecting what the museum is about and how it speaks to its visitors.

LINE, FORM, SHAPE: The lines of our cabinet are essential because they reflect the museum space itself. Also, we studied line throughout the cabinet, making decisions such as using cut outs to mirror the top curve for visual appeal. We had to make sure that not only does this cabinet look lovely to the eyes but that it is going to be practical for those operating AND those using it. Form, we used Frank Cheney's original design, but put our own fun little spin on it.

TEXTURE: Many a conversation has been spent on the texture, feel, and materials that we will use in this cabinet. It was really important to Kate to bring elements of the gift shop itself out into the lobby via the cabinet. We decided upon birch and plexi glass for a smooth, yet elegant feel.

PROPORTION, BALANCE, UNITY, RHYTHM, EMPHASIS:

The designing of the cabinet itself has been a study of each of these things in its own way. Proportion, how large? How small? How big in terms of the space in which it exists? Balance, in the literal sense, so that it doesn't tip over but also figuratively, bringing harmony to the space. Existing as an asset without overpowering. Unity, bringing a unified design to the shell that we received in the beginning. Putting our own touches on it and making something that the Weatherspoon will truly benefit from.
